Tilly was doing her best to be a strong hardy pup, the best she ever had in her whole 10 years of waddling the earth. She was trying so hard to be brave that she toughed it out when she held back from asking Al if she could stay home. Tilly, in fact, went to the bus stop with Sawyer, got on the bus, and made it to class and through reading hour before she ended up in the nurses office.
The puppy's face with wet and dribbling with snots and tears. A round of pitiful hiccups shook her body as she cradled the nurses phone under her ear.
"Okay, I'll be right there. Get some tissues, baby. Hold tight, and I'll see you soon."
"Okay" Tilly whimpered. "Bye bye."
The fluffy nurse took the phone back, her face glowing with a bit of amuse. "Here you go, hun. Just take a seat till your papa comes."
By the time Allen arrived, Tilly's tears had slowed. She was quite tired and losing the fight against the angry bunnies in her tummy. She hugged her backpack tight, paws crisscrossed and trembling.
"Tilly?" The familiar warm voice roused her from her writhing.
"Al." Tilly breathed before unraveling herself before the panther, wobbling toward him with open paws. "Al, it hurts."
Al smiled softly, welcoming the whimpering puppy into his arms. He nuzzled into her neck, rubbing the back of her head as he lifted her up.
"Oh, you poor thing. I know, I know. It'll be okay." Al cooed.
Tilly held tight, burrowing her snout into his sleek furred neck. Al was wearing a nice soft sweater which felt nice on her nose, a nice difference to the gnawing in her waist. With each chomp, Tilly gripped Al tighter while he spoke to the nurse - their words could not be heard over the all the teeth and claws tearing her apart.
On Al's shoulder, everything felt better. All of the tearing in her tummy dulled as she listened to the thumps of his heart beat while he walked her through the school. Her paws hugged his chest as he supported her bottom, her colorful backpack adorned with keychains swung over the other. Al had a low purr going, helping Tilly steady her breathing and cool to a couple hiccups every now and then.
Once they reached the car, Al patted the tired puppy's back to rouse her before he let her down to the blacktop.
Tilly whined, rubbing her eyes as her legs wobbled.
"We have two stops before we get home, okay?"
Tilly looked through the gaps between her claws. "T-two?"
Al nodded. "I need to get you some ibuprofen, a heating pad from the drug store so I can add it into Prox, and some food for tonight."
Tilly bit her lips, her paws slipping to her tummy and the bunnys began to thump and gnaw. A weak whine escaped the corners of her snout.
"It's all going to help you feel better, baby. I know you're a really strong girl, and you can make it 'til we get home."
Tilly looked away, not wanting to see Al's pleading eyes. Everything hurted so much, but with Al, it would be okay soon.
So, with a big huff, she nodded. "Okay."
"You can sit in the car if walking hurts too much."
Tilly's eyes swelled with tears again. Oh, she wish it didn't hurt. She loved to go in the store with Al, but it hurt so much to move.
"Okay." Tilly sniffed, climbing into her booster seat.
Al leaned to buckle in the sniffly pup, giving her a quick peck on the forehead before lifting back out of the car. He gently closed the door and opened his own. Tilly rested her head against the door, allowing her to curl her legs to her chest. Everything felt better like this.
Al kept the music low as they headed to the drugstore. It was on her favorite channel - they played so many songs that she'd karaoke when Lucas and Smeeps were in the car. Al was humming along to the current song, one she knew and liked very much, but everything was a haze to Tilly. She kept her eyes shut and held everything tight. Each thump in her tummy made her flinch and grind her teeth. It was hard to look, think or hear anything with how angry they were gnawing.
"Tilly, I'll be right back, okay?"
Tilly squinted at Al from the backseat. His soft expression was full of concern.
"Okay." She sniffed.
Al smiled and lifted out of the car, the click of the shut door and locking allowing Tilly to close her eyes again.
Tilly hated the pain so much. And every time she moved, she felt the cold, clear dampness on her bottom, making her cringe. If Tilly stayed curled up, it was easier to tone out. The puppy tensed all her body so none of the feelings could be felt. She gritted her teeth and hugged her legs, nearly falling out of her booster seat as the seat belt stretched over her hunched form. The line of angry bunnies gnawed and gnawed and gnawed, and Tilly couldn't think of anything else.
When Tilly glanced up to peer through the window, a dark figure was seen approaching it from afar. Her tail began to wag, a wave of warmth overtaking her chest just enough to pull her thoughts away from her cramps.
Al must have noticed her gaze as he lifted the bag before unlocking the doors and entering the car. "I got the goods."
"Where's next?" Tilly grunted.
"Do you think you're able to eat?"
Tilly grimaced. She denied breakfast because the thought of her favorite sandwich would come right out of her in class. Could she really eat now, when it felt as bad as ever?
"if you can, we can make this a cheat day and get Mickeys."
Tilly's ears perked at the sound of her favorite diner that had the perfectly crunchy french fries and toasted pitas. Her tail slapped against the leather seats as she felt the corner of her mouth curl.
"Mickeys?"
Al grinned, glancing at Tilly through the rearview as he backed out the parking lot. "Mmhm. I'm craving a steak dinner. Would you want your usual?"
"Y-yes...gyro and mozzarella sticks..." Tilly squeaked.
"Alright, sounds like a plan."
The drive through Mickey's drive-thru was pretty quick. There were only 2 or 3 cars ahead of them. Al got their bags and placed them in the passenger seat before glancing over to tilly. "Tilly, want your fries right now?"
Tilly nodded pitifully and wiggled out her claws. Al reached and handed her the large, warm styrofoam container. Her gyro was in there too, but right now, the fries were all that mattered. Except a piece of the gyro meat here and there.
The salty offers seemed to be good enough to keep the bunnies nicer until they made it home.
Tilly closed her container just in time as Al parked the car. She unbuckled herself and climbed out with the container cradled in her arms. Tilly waddled and stood on the porch watching as Al grabbed her belongings, the drugstore bag, his work bag and locked the doors behind him. The jingle of keys drifted past her as he reached the front door too.
The smell of soft linen and lavender rushed through Tilly's nostrils as Al opened up the door. The puppy was so tired, she was so happy to be home. She droopily carried herself to the couch, set down her container and crawled up and cower in the corner of the cushions.
Al sat down all of his things before taking off his jacket. He did his usual "come in house" activities. Tilly listened to the shuffling of papers, crinkle of plastic bag and taps of his claws against the creaky wooden floor that got louder with each step.
"Tilly" Al cooed. Tilly raised her head from her knees to meet Al's golden eyes and weak smile. "I have the ibuprofen."
Tilly blinked wearily before noticing that Al was holding the medicine dropper. Immediately, the puppy's jowls upturned as she snarled and stuck out her tongue. The thought of the bitter icky fruity taste flashed in her mind, making her cringe hard as the bunnies started to kick harder.
"No!" Tilly barked. "Its nasty!"
"I know, it is really gross. But we have to have the moment of icky before we can feel better again." Al rubbed her arm as she covered her face with her paws. "This will make the cramps not hurt so much so you can relax."
Tilly began to cry. The tart bitter taste was so vivid in her mind. The bunnies were already loud enough.
"I have your water. How about we take little sip first, then have the medicine, and then more water?"
Tilly hiccupped and nodded in defeat, lowering her soggy paws as Al lifted her water cup to her snout. He allowed her to take a gulp before leaning back to open her jaw. Al poured the tiny cup of thick bitter pink fluid down the puppy's throat as the tart cherry flavored dried out her tongue. She whined, reaching for the water cup that Al returned to her.
"Nice, you took it all on the first go! Good job, Tilly."
Tilly sniffed, feeling her tail slap against the sofa. Al stood up with a stretch. "I'll let you sleep out here until Lucas comes home, okay? You wanna watch some tv, or just sleep?"
Tilly sniffed, wiping her eyes before lifting her paw to her mouth. Al would probably go down to his office now if she was okay. She looked at the random news channel on the tv and whimpered.
"Can I lay in the office with you?"
Al lowered his ears apologetically. "It's no room to lay in the office, baby. The bean bags haven't come in the mail yet."
"I can lay on the floor."
Al shook his head and sighed. "On wood floors, yes, but down in the office, there's too many cords. How about this, we can lay in my room, I'll work on my bed. I'll upgrade Prox later."
Tilly wagged her tail, reaching out her paws to be lifted up by Allen again. Instinctively, she rested her head between his shoulder and his neck as he went to grab his computer bag and carry it up the steps. Al and Lucas had the coziest bedroom because the bed was the biggest. He had a big tv too that had all the channels and apps too. Al set her down once they reached the top of the stairs nudged his head toward the bathroom.
"Go on and change, I'll get the bed and your pajamas ready in the meantime."
Tilly nodded and waddled into the bathroom, almost no more energy left to fight with. She huffed and sat down on the toilet and pushed down her shorts and undies revealing a bloodied pad. Wincing at the surges of bunny kicks in her back, the puppy peeled it off the cotton fabric and rolled it up into toilet paper before placing it in the trash. She glanced over at the amenity shelf and stared at the new item laying beside her plastic encased pads. It was blue and yellow and had little stars on the white fabric. Tilly reached over, toes tipped as she leaned to take hold of the colorful underwear.
She let her undies drop from around her paws as she unfolded the springy colorful pullup and pulled it up on her legs. Putting her shorts back on wasn't needed, and it would make her feel worse. Tilly cleaned herself up and flushed the toilet and washed her paws. She weakly wobbled to Al's bedroom where he just finished removing his jewelry and plugging his laptop charger and Tilly's heating pad into the wall.
"All good?" Al asked as Tilly climbed up onto the bed. The puppy nodded, letting herself sink into the pillow and blanket under her belly. Al tapped the bed, signaling her to sit up and lift up her arms. He lifted the tee off of her before lowering a droopier t-shirt over the puppy's head. It was her favorite star one that went best with her pull ups.
The panther sat down and got comfortable next to her, his decorated laptop on his lap. Tilly snuggled closer to the panthers legs and shut her eyes, lulled to sleep by the clacking of his keyboard.
